Commodity roll yield without the accounting shortcuts
A commodity's spot price can be unchanged while a futures strategy gains or loses. The missing explanation is often the path of the contracts held, not a mysterious fee charged at rollover. Roll analysis requires both a maturity-selection rule and a capital-based profit ledger.
Track each contract through its holding period, distinguish curve shape from realized price changes, and account separately for collateral and implementation costs. Selling one maturity and opening another at a different quote is not, by itself, an immediate profit or loss equal to the quote gap.
Describe the exposure being renewed
A futures position has a maturity; a long-running research strategy therefore needs a rule for selecting its replacement. Specify the eligible months, roll dates, quantities, and price references. Some rules hold the nearest eligible contract, others target a more distant maturity, and others spread replacement across several sessions. Their resulting histories need not agree even when every rule references the same commodity.
Define whether the strategy maintains constant contract quantity, constant notional exposure, or a target risk measure. When prices differ across maturities, these choices change how much exposure the replacement creates. A study that reports roll effects without its sizing convention leaves an important part of the calculation unspecified. Preserve each maturity and quantity rather than rely exclusively on a stitched price line.
Distinguish curve shape from subsequent returns
CME explains contango and backwardation through relationships between spot and futures prices and the shape of the forward curve. For a long exposure, convergence along an otherwise unchanged upward-sloping curve can be a drag; the opposite configuration can support returns. That statement is conditional. Spot prices and the entire curve can move while the position is held.
The observed price gap between two maturities is not a locked-in return estimate for an arbitrary holding period. Storage economics, seasonal patterns, financing, inventory availability, and risk compensation can all matter. A curve can also contain both rising and falling segments. Report the particular maturities being compared rather than force a complex seasonal curve into one contango-or-backwardation label.
Worked hypothetical example: a loss with unchanged spot
Assume a hypothetical strategy holds exposure to 100 units through a futures contract initially quoted at 104. Spot is 100. During the holding period, the futures price falls to 100 while spot remains 100. Gross futures profit is 100 times minus four, or minus USD 400. With USD 10,400 of starting designated capital, the futures component is approximately minus 3.846%.
If that capital earns an assumed USD 104 of collateral income during the same period, combined profit before other costs is minus USD 296, or approximately minus 2.846%. Next, suppose the position is replaced with a contract quoted at 103. Opening that contract does not itself create an additional USD 300 loss. Subsequent price changes, exposure sizing, spreads, and transaction charges determine the next holding period's economics.
| Hypothetical ledger item | Amount | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Futures price movement, 104 to 100 on 100 units | -USD 400 | Loss earned during the holding period |
| Assumed collateral income | +USD 104 | Income outside the futures price movement |
| Combined result before costs | -USD 296 | Return denominator is USD 10,400 |
| Replacement quote, 103 | No automatic USD 300 loss | A new exposure begins at a different maturity price |
Choose a decomposition and keep it consistent
Different research conventions divide commodity returns into spot, roll, and collateral components differently. Define the chosen decomposition algebraically and show that it reconciles to the strategy return. If roll is calculated as a residual against a selected spot series, the result also inherits that series' timing and basis differences. It is not necessarily a pure measure of physical storage economics.
IMF commodity-price index documentation describes a price indicator with specified components and weights, not a universal collateralized futures strategy. Do not compare its percentage change with a futures total-return series and label the entire difference roll yield. Currency, commodity weights, maturity choices, cash income, and transaction costs can contribute. Align these elements first or present a qualified comparison rather than a false reconciliation.
Check the mechanics of the roll schedule
A roll may be implemented as a calendar spread or as separate transactions. Either way, include executable bid-ask assumptions and any delay between legs in a hypothetical study. Prices observed at different times can create an apparent spread that was never jointly available. Record whether settlement references, intraday quotes, or actual executions were used, since these support different claims about implementation.
Do not treat exchange margin as the entire economic investment. CME's mark-to-market discussion explains daily profit and loss settlement, which can create cash demands before a longer-horizon thesis resolves. Collateral conventions, variation payments, and financing influence a capital-based return. A strategy can look modestly risky on notional returns while exposing a thinly funded account to substantial liquidity pressure.
Stress the path instead of extrapolating a curve snapshot
Compare hypothetical paths with unchanged spot, a parallel curve move, and a change concentrated in the nearby contracts. Hold the roll rule fixed across the exercises. This reveals whether the result depends on level exposure, maturity-specific repricing, or convergence assumptions. It also prevents a favorable curve snapshot from being interpreted as a guaranteed stream of future roll gains.
Seasonal markets deserve particular care because replacing one delivery season with another changes the underlying economic exposure. A premium for winter delivery need not disappear over a single calendar month. Compare like delivery conditions when possible, and identify what cannot be held constant. Annualizing one observed spread mechanically can exaggerate a contribution that may reverse or recur on a different schedule.
Explain what a reported roll figure does and does not show
Publish the contracts, roll dates, quantity rule, spot comparator, capital denominator, and cost treatment with the result. If the analysis uses only continuous data, say which roll information the source embeds and whether individual-contract verification is available. A descriptive historical result is useful even when it cannot support a claim about actual brokerage implementation.
Investigate charts that jump at rollover, reports that book the maturity quote difference as an immediate cash payment, and decompositions that count convergence twice. A negative roll contribution does not imply a negative total commodity return, just as positive carry cannot ensure a profit. The goal is to explain the historical return path under a stated method, not recommend the contract with the most attractive apparent premium.
What to retain
- A maturity quote gap is not automatically a realized loss when contracts are replaced.
- Calculate contract profit, collateral income, and costs using a defined capital base.
- Curve snapshots describe conditions, while realized roll analysis requires a holding path.
